*This was written before I turned veggie, there are plenty of vegetarian friendly options on both brunch and dinner menus – despite the carnivorous name of the place.
My love affair with Meat 59 Is no secret, I once watched a guy sweat his way through a first date as he scoffed a jalapeno stuffed burger there. What’s not to love?
It’s like all the best burger places you’ve been to rolled up into one. And I’m not saying it’s 100% my evangelising but they’ve just opened a second restaurant in the Devon metropolis (Exeter) and they’re serving up brunch. Eeep.
Vix and I went a couple of weeks ago to see if they give as good a brunch as they do burger. Spoiler: they absolutely do.
On Magdalen Road in Exeter, you’ll head through the bar and restaurant to the bright, airy conservatory at the back and pull up a pew.
The brunch menu is varied and not all meat based, the earl grey porridge with hazelnut crumble sounded divine and is definitely next on my hit list. But I started my Meat59 brunch journey with sharing eggs (for one, I swears it!): a gorgeous wholesome bowl of tomato, pepper and chorizo stew topped with crumbled feta and a perfectly poached egg. Served with a side of sourdough toast for dunking.Fresh from the gym, Vix went for the monstrous crumpets with chorizo, avocado, poached eggs and hollandaise. She made some very inappropriate noises for a public place as she polished the whole thing off.
Everything was ridiculously well cooked and seasoned and tasted as good as everything else I’ve eaten in Meat59. And we agreed that the coffee was among some of the best we’ve quaffed in a while. Oh, there’s a neon flamingo on the bar too. No biggie. If Meat59 and I were new lovers, I’d be dumped by text for my inability to play it cool. In fact, if I take the really long way home from work I could just drop in and see if they’ve missed me as much as I’ve missed them…
I have zero chill.
Brunch @ Meat59. Find them on Magdalen Road, Exeter, Abbey Road, Torquay and rocking up at a festival near you sometime soon no doubt. Brunch is now served in both Exeter and Torquay.
NB this is not sponsored, I just really love an independent business nailing it.
